Aviero, Portugal

Hailed as the Portuguese equivalent to Venice, maritime Aveiro is perched on the shores of a coastal lagoon. Brightly colored moliceiros (traditional boats) cruise the city's canal network, while Aveiro's old town boasts buildings decorated with traditional azulejo tiles. The historic area is quite small warranting a lunchtime stop while going between Lisbon and Porto.

Coimbra, Portugal

Its historic center rises steeply from the river; dating to Moorish times it's wonderfully atmospheric, with dark cobbled lanes and a monumental cathedral to enjoy. Often done as a day trip from Porto, Coimbra is worthy of a night or two in its own right.

Obidos, Portugal - The "wedding Gift" town.

This medieval village was a gift from King Dinis to Queen Isabel on their wedding day in 1282. A walk along its high city walls gives a great view of the terra cotta roofs, white-washed buildings, and cobblestone streets of the town below.
Originally a part of the Roman Empire this lovely town is just an hour from Lisbon and well worth a visit.

Porto, Portugal

Located along the Douro River, Porto is one of the oldest European centers and is the second-largest city in Portugal. Its core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Great food, wine - port of course - and beautiful winding, steep streets all await you.
